Cultivating a Global Perspective Without Traveling

Updated: Oct 4, 2023

In an increasingly interconnected world, having a global perspective is essential for

personal growth, career advancement, and fostering a deeper understanding of our planet's diverse cultures and societies. While travel can be an enriching experience, it's not always accessible or feasible for everyone. Fortunately, there are numerous ways to cultivate a global perspective from the comfort of your home.

Here are some practical steps to help you achieve just that:

Read Widely: Books are windows to the world. Dive into literature from various countries, authors, and genres. Reading novels, non-fiction, and essays by writers from diverse backgrounds will expose you to different perspectives, histories, and cultures. Join a book club or engage in online discussions to gain deeper insights.

Some of my favorites are:

  • "The World Is Flat" by Thomas L. Friedman - This book explores the impact of globalization on the world's economy and how it has flattened the playing field for individuals and businesses.

  • "Guns, Germs, and Steel" by Jared Diamond - Diamond examines the factors that have shaped the course of human history and why certain civilizations have been more successful than others.

  • "The Post-American World" by Fareed Zakaria - Zakaria discusses the rise of other global powers and the shifting balance of power in the world, challenging the notion of American dominance.

Follow International News: Stay informed about global events and issues by reading international news sources, watching documentaries, and listening to podcasts. This will broaden your understanding of global politics, economics, and social dynamics. Consider sources like BBC World News, The Economist, Al Jazeera, or Reuters.

Learn a New Language: Learning a foreign language is an excellent way to immerse yourself in a different culture. Use language-learning apps, online courses, or even local language meet-up groups to get started. Even basic language skills can open doors to new perspectives. There are free apps you can use to connect with others interested in doing a language exchange. This is how I have made almost all of my international friends. I've written a full review on these apps, so check out those posts after this one!

HelloTalk: great for finding a language partner and local meet up groups.

Tandem: I love the parties feature, where you can join an online chat room where everyone is there to discuss a specific topic and practice language learning.

Once you have learned a new language, you will then be ready to connect with people worldwide: Social media platforms and online communities (like HelloTalk and Tandem) offer the opportunity to connect with people from diverse backgrounds. Engage in conversations, share experiences, and learn from individuals worldwide. Platforms like Twitter, Reddit, and LinkedIn can be excellent for this purpose.

Attend Virtual Cultural Events: Many cultural organizations and museums now offer virtual tours and events. Explore virtual art exhibitions, attend online concerts, or participate in cultural festivals from different parts of the world. These experiences can be both enriching and educational (but also fulfills my deep introverted soul by not making me interact with people in person).

Volunteer or Work Remotely: Explore remote job opportunities or volunteer for organizations with a global reach. Many nonprofits and businesses offer remote positions that allow you to collaborate with people from different countries and gain international experience from your home.

Join Global Online Courses: Enroll in online courses or webinars that focus on global issues, cultures, or history. Websites like Coursera, edX, Master Class, and Khan Academy offer a wide range of courses taught by experts from around the world.

Read Travel Blogs and Watch Travel Vlogs: While you may not be traveling yourself, you can still live vicariously through the experiences of others. Follow travel blogs, watch travel vlogs on YouTube, and explore travel photography to get a sense of different destinations and cultures. Oh, and need I mention listen to the Cultural Discourse Podcast?

Cook International Cuisine: Food is a massive piece to the cultural puzzle. Experiment with cooking recipes from various countries (this is a personal favorite of mine). Preparing and enjoying international dishes at home can be a delightful way to explore different cultures' flavors and culinary traditions, not to mention a great topic for discussion with your new friends around the globe!

Engage in Intercultural Dialogue: Participate in discussions and debates on topics related to global affairs. Engaging in respectful dialogues with people from different backgrounds can help you gain fresh perspectives and refine your own worldview.

By adopting some of these steps, you can cultivate a global perspective and become a more informed, empathetic, and culturally aware individual without the need for extensive travel. Remember that the world is at your fingertips, and your curiosity and willingness to explore it can lead to a richer, more interconnected life.

Most importantly, approach one's differences with an open mind and awareness of your own biases. You don't need to disregard your own beliefs in order to understand someone else's. In fact in my personal experience, a strong sense of self identity makes it easier to understand a totally different perspective or way of life.
